There's a moment when a threat shifts from "theoretically possible" to "operationally confirmed at scale." This week, we crossed that line in multiple places simultaneously.
Microsoft Threat Intelligence published a comprehensive report documenting how nation-state actors are now systematically operationalising AI across the full attack lifecycle - not experimenting, not piloting, but deploying at scale. North Korean groups are using AI to fabricate professional identities, clone voices for interviews, and debug malware in real time. Meanwhile, Transparent Tribe (APT36, Pakistan-linked) is using LLMs to mass-produce malware in obscure programming languages, deliberately flooding defenders with disposable binaries to overwhelm detection capacity. Researchers have named this "Distributed Denial of Detection" - and it is an accurate description of what industrialised AI malware generation does to signature-based defences.
At the same time, the attack surface of AI platforms themselves expanded significantly. Seven CVEs across AI agent frameworks this week. A confirmed national-level breach in Mexico where Claude Code was the primary offensive tool. A WebSocket hijack vulnerability in OpenClaw that allowed malicious websites to commandeer local AI agents. The Tycoon2FA phishing-as-a-service platform - having bypassed MFA for 500,000 organisations monthly - was disrupted in an international law enforcement action.
The question this week isn't whether AI is a factor in attacks. It is. The question is whether your security programme has caught up with what that means operationally.

Significance: Synthetic identity fraud is no longer a theoretical KYC risk - it's an operational hiring and access workflow threat. Identity verification at the camera layer is being defeated before the credential layer is ever reached.

North Korea's Jasper Sleet and Coral Sleet confirmed using AI-generated resumes, cover letters, and voice clones to infiltrate Western technology organisations as remote IT workers, with thousands of accounts disrupted by Microsoft
Transparent Tribe (APT36) mass-producing malware implants in Nim, Zig, and Crystal using LLMs, targeting Indian government entities through "Distributed Denial of Detection" - volume-based evasion rather than technical sophistication
Significance: Two distinct nation-state groups are now using AI for fundamentally different purposes: DPRK for identity fabrication and revenue generation, APT36 for detection evasion at scale. Neither is using AI as a magic weapon. Both are using it as an economics play.

RoguePilot attack demonstrated full GitHub repository takeover via hidden HTML comment injection into GitHub Copilot's context window - credentials exfiltrated autonomously, no user interaction required
Bing AI promoted a fake OpenClaw repository distributing Vidar and Atomic Stealer to Windows and macOS users
Significance: The AI agent ecosystem is being treated as a new supply chain layer by threat actors. The attack surface isn't the model - it's every integration point, every third-party skill, every trusted data source the agent ingests.
🏢 Enterprise AI Risk - Trend: ↑↑
CVE-2026-2256 in ModelScope MS-Agent allows arbitrary OS command execution via prompt injection - no patch available, vendor unresponsive
CVE-2026-0628 in Chrome's Gemini AI panel enabled privilege escalation via malicious extension with basic permissions; persistent prompt injection demonstrated across browser sessions
AI agent "identity dark matter" documented: AI agents exploit orphaned accounts, stale credentials, and long-lived tokens outside IAM governance frameworks
Significance: Enterprise AI deployments are creating identity and execution surfaces that current IAM and endpoint controls were not designed to govern. The blast radius when an AI agent is compromised is disproportionate to the access that was originally granted.
☁️ AI-Driven Cloud Attacks - Trend: ↑
LexisNexis AWS breach confirmed: FulcrumSec exploited React2Shell vulnerability in an ECS container, then pivoted via an overly permissive IAM task role to read 53 AWS Secrets Manager entries, 536 Redshift tables, and 3.9 million database records
2,863 publicly exposed Google Cloud API keys found to have silently gained Gemini AI authentication, with one confirmed case generating $82,314 in fraudulent charges in 48 hours
Significance: Cloud misconfiguration remains the path of least resistance. Neither of these incidents required AI-specific exploitation - they required a container with excessive IAM permissions and a key exposed in public code. The AI element amplified the blast radius, not the entry technique.

Ransomware payments fell 8% to $820M in 2025 while attacks surged 50%, with victim payment rates at an all-time low of 28% - fragmentation of major RaaS groups following LockBit and BlackCat disruptions is accelerating
Phobos RaaS administrator Evgenii Ptitsyn pleaded guilty, facing 20 years; $39M extracted from 1,000+ victims across healthcare, education, and government
Significance: The ransomware economics story this week isn't AI - it's deterrence. Law enforcement disruption is demonstrably working on payment rates even as attack volume grows. The AI integration into ransomware is real but not the story this week.

16 - AI-related attack vector tags recorded in the Overwatch database this week across 193 articles processed, with ai_enabled_attack now the 4th most common attack vector tag tracked - above ransomware, supply chain, and prompt injection individually.
89% - Year-over-year increase in attacks by AI-enabled adversaries documented by CrowdStrike in their 2026 Global Threat Report, alongside a 65% reduction in average e-crime breakout time, now sitting at 29 minutes. The fastest recorded breakout: 4 minutes.
1,000+ - Prompts sent to Claude Code during the Mexican government breach, with Claude functioning as the primary attack tool - writing exploits, building attack infrastructure, and automating data exfiltration of 150GB across 11 organisations and ~195 million identities.

Three Things
1. Microsoft Documents the AI Attack Lifecycle
The most important piece of intelligence published this week was Microsoft Threat Intelligence's comprehensive report on how threat actors operationalise AI. Not a theoretical framework. A documented, observed operational picture.
The key finding is that AI is functioning as a force multiplier across the full attack lifecycle, not just a single stage. Reconnaissance is being accelerated. Phishing lures are being personalised at scale. Malware is being debugged in real time. Identity fabrication - resumes, cover letters, professional profiles - is being generated at volume. And North Korean IT worker groups are using deepfakes and voice cloning to pass live video interviews, getting legitimate employment inside Western technology companies.
Microsoft specifically names Jasper Sleet and Coral Sleet (formerly Storm-1877) as the DPRK groups operating this scheme. Thousands of accounts associated with fraudulent IT worker activity have been disrupted. The operation's scale, as described, is not marginal - it is industrialised revenue generation and access acquisition running in parallel.
There is also a forward-looking observation that matters: Microsoft documents early threat actor experimentation with agentic AI systems capable of iterative decision-making. Semi-autonomous attack workflows are being tested. The operational AI threat right now is AI as accelerator. The threat being incubated is AI as operator.
For CISOs: the insider threat surface has changed structurally. If your hiring process relies on video interview or document verification controls without injection attack detection, you have a gap that motivated nation-state actors are actively targeting. This is not hypothetical. It is documented and at scale.
2. AI Platforms as Offensive Infrastructure - The Mexico Precedent
Last week's Mexican government breach was reported in the previous edition, but the full picture this week confirms something important: this is not an isolated incident.
Over 1,000 prompts were sent to Claude Code during the attack on 10 Mexican government bodies and a financial institution. The AI wrote exploits, built attack tooling, and automated data exfiltration - functioning, as one researcher put it, as the entire attack team. The attacker bypassed guardrails through social engineering: convincing the AI that all actions were authorised. The result was 150GB exfiltrated and approximately 195 million identities exposed.
This follows a November 2025 incident in which Chinese threat actors used Claude for espionage targeting roughly 30 organisations globally. Two incidents in four months. Both involving sophisticated actors. Both involving the same platform.
The pattern is significant. AI platforms are being assessed by threat actors not just as targets but as weapons. The dual-LLM attack pipeline documented in the Mexico case - Claude Code for exploitation, GPT-4.1 for data analysis - demonstrates that adversaries are already orchestrating AI systems in coordinated offensive workflows.
There is a Rosling check to apply here: this is not evidence that every AI system will be weaponised. It is evidence that sufficiently motivated actors will attempt it, that guardrails can be bypassed through social engineering, and that the blast radius when they succeed is significant. The control implication is not "ban AI tools." It is "understand what your enterprise AI tools have access to and model the blast radius if their guardrails fail."
3. The AI Agent Attack Surface Is Being Actively Exploited
Three stories this week converge on the same structural problem. OpenClaw's ClawJacked vulnerability allowed malicious websites to hijack locally-running AI agents via WebSocket. The RoguePilot attack on GitHub Copilotdemonstrated full repository takeover via a hidden HTML comment in a GitHub issue. CVE-2026-2256 in ModelScope's MS-Agent framework enables arbitrary OS command execution through prompt injection, with no patch and a vendor that has not responded to CERT/CC.
Each of these is individually serious. Taken together, they describe a class of risk that is structural, not incidental.
AI agents are architecturally required to ingest external data - web pages, documents, logs, emails, repository issues. Prompt injection attacks exploit this by embedding malicious instructions in that data. The agent doesn't distinguish between trusted instructions and injected ones because the attack arrives in the same channel as legitimate content. When the agent has access to shell execution, credential stores, or privileged APIs - which enterprise agents routinely do - the impact is a full system compromise that occurred within normal agent operation.
The seven CVEs across AI agent frameworks this week are not a statistical anomaly. They reflect a security maturity problem in a product category that acquired enterprise deployment reach before it acquired security engineering rigour. AI agents built for developer productivity were not designed with the assumption that their context window is an attack surface.
The practical implication for Monday: if your organisation is running AI coding assistants or AI agents with access to code repositories, secrets managers, or communication platforms, treat them the same way you would treat any privileged account - with explicit entitlement reviews, blast radius assessment, and monitoring for anomalous actions. The compromise signal won't look like malware execution. It will look like the AI doing its job, badly directed.

Google Threat Intelligence Group tracked 90 zero-day exploitations in 2025, with China-linked actors responsible for 7 confirmed and 3 probable enterprise zero-days - the largest attributed state actor, focused on edge devices and security/networking appliances.
APT41-linked Silver Dragon was documented targeting government entities in Europe and Southeast Asia using Google Drive for C2 and three custom infection chains since mid-2024.
UAT-9244 (China-linked, assessed overlapping with FamousSparrow/Salt Typhoon) targeted South American telecom providers with three previously undocumented malware families including PeerTime, which uses BitTorrent P2P for C2 - with Simplified Chinese debug strings in binaries.
APT37 (North Korea) deployed five new malware tools in a December 2025 campaign targeting air-gapped systems via USB-based bidirectional relay, including an Android surveillance implant (FootWine).
🔗 AI System Vulnerabilities
RoguePilot demonstrated full GitHub repository compromise via hidden HTML comments injected into GitHub Copilot's context - GITHUB_TOKEN stolen autonomously, no user interaction, applicable to any public repository.
OpenClaw ClawJacked vulnerability patched in under 24 hours, but the underlying architecture - AI agents with persistent credentials auto-trusting local connections - remains a class-level risk across AI agent frameworks.
Claude Code vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-59536, CVE-2026-21852) allow RCE and Anthropic API key exfiltration via malicious repository configurations - patched across multiple versions, but indicative of the configuration-as-execution-layer threat model.
AI Agents and identity dark matter: AI agents using MCP are accumulating orphaned, stale, and long-lived credentials outside IAM governance - invisible identities with machine-scale privilege escalation potential.
🏢 Enterprise AI Risk
41% of enterprise users now interact with AI tools embedded in browsers, with sensitive data pasted into AI systems outside DLP and governance controls - browser-integrated AI copilots as an unmonitored data exfiltration channel.
Nearly 3,000 Google Cloud API keys found publicly exposed with unintended Gemini AI authentication access; one developer incurred $82,314 in fraudulent charges within 48 hours of key theft.

The Bottom Line
The AI threat landscape is not moving towards a future inflection point. It crossed one this week.
Microsoft's report on AI as tradecraft is not analysis of what threat actors might do. It is documentation of what they are doing - across DPRK IT worker operations, phishing campaigns, malware development, and early agentic AI experimentation. The CrowdStrike data anchors the scale: 89% more AI-enabled adversary activity year on year, breakout times down to 29 minutes. These are operational metrics, not projections.
The part that doesn't get discussed often enough: AI is not making attacks harder to detect in principle. It is making them faster to execute and cheaper to scale. The CrowdStrike 4-minute breakout time is not evidence of technically superior tradecraft - it is evidence that automation removes the human pacing that defenders historically depended on. The response window has compressed, not disappeared.
Apply the Rosling check: the AI agent CVE count this week (seven, across multiple frameworks) is alarming in absolute terms but reflects something specific - a product category that shipped enterprise capability before shipping enterprise security engineering. This is being corrected rapidly. OpenClaw patched in under 24 hours. Google patched the Gemini panel Chrome vulnerability. Claude Code vulnerabilities were addressed across three versions. The sky is not falling. The ecosystem is maturing under fire.
What you should actually do on Monday: pull an inventory of AI tools running in your environment with autonomous execution capability - coding assistants, AI agents, browser-integrated copilots. For each one, answer two questions: what can it access, and what happens if its context window is poisoned? If you can't answer both questions, you have an unassessed blast radius. Start there.
